Surgical treatment
ranges from a minimally invasive laser treatment, to the surgical ‘gold standard’ -
TURP, to a very invasive open prostatectomy. Understanding the level
of risk and
desired outcomes that you are hoping to achieve will
help guide you to the right treatment choice.
GreenLight
PV® laser system
The
PVP (Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate) procedure
using the GreenLight laser system offers a unique and
simple solution to
BPH because it combines the effectiveness of TURP,
the surgical "gold
standard" with the safety, comfort and ease of a minimally invasive
treatment.
The
GreenLight laser system uses a very high powered "green laser" which
immediately vaporize and precisely removes enlarged prostate tissue..
Most
patients return home a few short hours after the PVP procedure and
can return to normal, non-strenuous activities within days. The GreenLight
laser system delivers the ultimate BPH solution - free from urinary
symptoms, free from compromise, free to go!
Other
Laser Technologies
In
the mid- 1990s, other lasers were used to treat enlarged prostate.
Wavelength color varies from laser to laser and that color determines
the effect on tissue. Many of these lasers used laser heat to destroy
but not remove enlarged prostate tissue. The destroyed tissue is left
in the body and is expelled over time, causing urinary pain and discomfort
for several weeks. These lasers are different from the GreenLight
PVP™ Laser which uses a patented green light laser to quickly
and safely vaporize and remove tissue, leaving a wide-open channel
for urine to pass through immediately. Results and relief are rapid.
Recovery is quick and comfortable.
Transurethral
Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
Transurethral Resection of
the Prostate (TURP) is known as the "gold
standard" of treatment for BPH and has been for more than 50 years.
In this procedure, enlarged prostate tissue is removed
surgically resulting in symptom relief and restored urine flow.
TURP is an invasive surgical procedure. There is an increased risk
of complications, including excessive blood loss, blood transfusion,
incontinence, impotence, infection, painful urination and a high rate
of retrograde ejaculation. TURP requires a 1-4 day hospital stay and
1-3 days wearing a catheter. Recovery time averages 4-6 weeks.
