Medical
therapy is usually the first line of defense against enlarged prostate
symptoms. Medical therapy is the least invasive treatment option but
it must be taken every day to sustain results.
A variety
of medications are available and are designed to either relax the prostate
muscle or inhibit the growth of the gland. Often, medications are used
in combination. Consult with your physician regarding potential interactions
with other medications you may be taking.
There
will likely be a delay from the time you start taking medication to the
time you notice an improvement in your urinary symptoms. It is important
to be monitored while taking BPH medication, as the effectiveness may
weaken over time and there may be an impact on your bladder function if
the prostate continues to enlarge with time. Medication therapy may eventually
cease to provide symptom relief and so further treatment may be required.
Published
clinical studies report potential side effects of impotence, dizziness,
headaches, fatigue and loss of sexual drive.
Ask
your insurance provider if they cover the cost of medical therapy for
BPH.
